A new sales tax for foreign digital companies that provide audio or visual services could generate tax revenues of about 3.6 billion pesos ($ 185 million) a year, a senior party MP in Mexico said.
The Ministry of Finance says it is currently negotiating the collection of foreign companies online, and the National Movement of Regeneration (MORENA) of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sends a bill to Congress to legislate on the tax.
“If we approve the initiative, the Mexican state could get about 3.6 billion pesos a year,” said Ricardo Monreal, MORENA Senate leader, at a news conference.
“I’m not talking about Uber, I’m not talking about Airbnb,” Monreal added. “I’m only talking about audiovisuals. Essentially, Netflix, Apple, Spotify … Amazon Prime and another, there are four or five. ”
