Six foreign and Mexican renewable energy companies have filed a lawsuit against the federal government for a rule change that the industry says will severely hurt investment in clean energy.
People familiar with the lawsuit told Bloomberg news agency that the US power generator AES Corp., the Italian company Enel, the French company Electricite de France, the Cubico Sustainable Investments of the United Kingdom and Zuma Energia and the Balam Fund. from Mexico filed lawsuits against the government.
The companies’ goal is to overturn a decision by the Energy Secretariat to grant clean energy credits designed to encourage the development of new wind and solar parks for old state-run renewable energy projects.
Credits can be sold to large energy consumers required by the government to buy a certain amount of renewable energy. Its sale generates additional revenue for renewable energy projects.
Sources tell Bloomberg that the six disgruntled energy companies are developing 14 projects in Mexico that have received almost half of all clean energy credits.
