The Federal Official Gazette (DOU) published on 22/11 presidential decree publishing the decision by the Federative Republic of Brazil not to renew the validity of the agreement between Brazil and Chile on maritime transport, signed on April 25, 1974 The decree confirms the decision taken by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) in July 2017.
According to the act, the Brazilian decision had already been informed to Chile as of 2017. The document states that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a verbal note to the Government of the Republic of Chile, on August 8, 2017, to communicate the decision for not renewal of the Agreement from January 8, 2020 ”.
The agreement, which established a preference for Brazilian and Chilean flagged vessels in maritime cargo transportation between the two countries (known as the cargo reserve), came into force in 1975 and has been renewed ever since. With the expiry of the instrument, the maritime transport of goods between the two countries may be carried out on ships of any flag.
