49 cyber attacks are reported every minute in Argentina. In most cases, it is the ruse known as phishing, a digital scam that attempts to persuade users to log their secret data into fake pages set up by hackers. The basic tricks are to duplicate bank pages to capture keys. Other schemes are more sophisticated in their quest to capture sensitive information through the use of what is known as social engineering.
The trap works here and around the world, so computer security experts say that next year there could be an increase in cyber crime designed to steal streaming services, those that deliver multimedia content on the web, such as Netflix, with movies and series. .
Last year, the region suffered massive cyber attacks against users, businesses and banks. In Mexico, they suffered Dark Tequila Añejo, sophisticated malware to steal financial information; while Brazil was the victim of BRata, malware that can remotely access any mobile phone using the Android system.
Argentina also had its high participation in computer crimes through a succession of phishing advances that specifically aimed to steal keys to enter victims’ home banking. Attempts to breach digital systems in our country have been multiple: a report by Kaspersky, one of the leading companies in the field of computer security, revealed that there were 25,700,000 malware attacks in Argentina.
This cyber security company also noted that attacks on the electronic banking have increased since 2018 and that cyber threats are expected to increase. According to the latest Advanced Persistent Threat Survey (APT) that Kaspersky prepares each year, the targeted attack landscape will change in the coming months.
Santiago Pontiroli, an analyst at the company, said the most serious problems planned for next year include high-level attacks on financial institutions as well as bitcoin-related scams, as there will not only be a surge in attacks known as “sextorion”. (where the victim is accused of seeing pornographic material on his computer and is threatened with public betrayal), but other more elaborate fundraising scams targeting users of digital buying and selling sites, as well as cryptocurrency exchange.
