CCAD will receive a US $ 368,000 grant to be selected in the Large Equipment Acquisition Program (PAGE), an initiative of the UNC’s Secretariat of Science and Technology (Secyt).
Marcelo Mariscal, director of the winning project and vice dean of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences, explained: “The advantage of supercomputers is that they can perform cutting-edge research, reducing costs and time through computer simulations.”
“This equipment will be used in many disciplines and applications, such as materials design, drug design, astrophysics, renewable energy, but it can also provide solutions for many small businesses,” said Mariscal.
According to the Unciencia report, supercomputers are essential for simulating complex phenomena using mathematical models, they are able to analyze a multitude of scenarios and evaluate the behavior of numerous variables in a virtual way, without the need to physically perform a extensive experimental series.
Their main virtue is that they use thousands of parallel processors to calculate a result, and thus their speed: a model whose processing requires 24 hours of calculation on a personal computer takes a few seconds on a supercomputer.
In the development of a product, the time saved allows to reduce costs in the design stages, optimization, validation and even application.
Oscar Reula, director of CCAD, said: “In designing a drug to produce the desired effect, one has to find a molecule that comes together in a certain way. With a database that contains information about millions of molecules, I can simulate the combinations and, in every way possible, stick to the most promising ones. ”
“Only then can I start the experiment. This saves time and money that would otherwise take a lifetime. That is why we who have little money should invest it precisely in these things,” said Reula.
