In the midst of serious unrest in the country, Sebastián Piñera announced the cancellation of the readjustment until he reached an agreement with citizens about the impact of drastic dollar rises on tariff setting.
The increase in passage sparked a wave of protests and riots, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency in the Chilean capital and putting army soldiers on the streets to try to maintain public order.
Santiago’s army general in charge of security ordered a curfew in the Chilean capital to face the protracted wave of protests. He had declared a state of emergency hours earlier.
