MPX (MPXE3) and MMX (MMXM3) announced on December 23 that Corema (Comisión Regional de Medio Ambiente) approved the construction of a new port in Chile, 80 kilometers from the municipality of Copiapó. The project belongs to OMX, an EBX group company – which includes all the companies in question.
The construction, which will take approximately 30 months to complete, will require a total investment of US $ 300 million, according to forecasts.
“The implementation of the port will guarantee competitive logistical costs and an efficient supply of coal to the Castilla thermal power plant. With a capacity of up to 2,100 MW, Castilla is one of the largest licensing projects currently in Chile and an important growth platform for MPX in the country, ”said Eduardo Karrer, president of MPX, according to a statement issued by the company. Roger Downey, president of MMX, also stressed that this is one of the most competitive increases in supply in the overseas market.
