An AWS spokeswoman declined to comment on the type of data facility that the Bahia Blanca project would be – or if it is different from the previously announced “Edge” location – although the size of the investment suggests a significant installation.
Argentina and Chile are competing to attract AWS to build a complete data center for the region in their respective countries, given the size of the investment.
AWS said in June it would strengthen its presence in Latin America with a smaller “Edge” location in Argentina, the first in the country to help accelerate service for local users.
The so-called “Edge” would also be located in the capital Buenos Aires, where AWS opened an office in April 2018 and will help deliver data, videos and applications at higher speeds and improve cyber security, the company said.
